Summer Reading Program 2017

Children’s Services staff hopes that Summer Reading Program (SRP) participants will be involved with books all summer long and enjoy time spent reading.  SRP is not a race or competition, but a self-paced reading program.  You are encouraged to participate, achieve reading goals, and have FUN along the way!  Here's how to participate...

  • Beginning Sunday, June 11, 2017 register online at or visit the Library’s Children’s Room beginning Monday, June 12, 2017.  Online registration ends Saturday, July 22, 2017.

  • Read to achieve reading goals of 1, 10, 20, 30, and 50 cumulative hours throughout the six-week program.

  • Log your reading hours online using the Library’s Summer Reading Program database.

  • Those entering 6th – 8th grades may take part in the youth program.  For each of the five reading goals (1, 10, 20, 30, and 50 cumulative hours) achieved and logged, submit at least one online book review to earn a raffle ticket for entry into the grand prize drawing at the end of the Summer Reading Program.  Book reviews must be at least three sentences and written in your own words. You may earn a maximum of five raffle tickets throughout the program.  [The grand prize drawing for the youth program will be held the week of July 31 – August 4, 2017.]

  • Upon reading and logging 1, 10, 20, 30, and 50 cumulative hours/submitting online book review(s), beginning Monday, June 19, 2017, visit the Library’s Summer Reading Program prize table, located in the Children’s Room, to pick up your earned prize(s)/raffle ticket(s).  Prizes will be available while supplies last and the Library reserves the right to substitute prizes as needed.

  • The Library’s prize table will be open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday & Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • All reading hours must be logged/book reviews submitted online and your earned prize(s)/raffle ticket(s) claimed by Saturday, July 29, 2017 before 5:30 p.m.

The Arcadia Public Library will offer free events for children and their families throughout the summer months, including storytimes, special performers, outdoor concerts, and much more!  There will also be fun summer programming provided throughout the City of Arcadia.

    Why Summer Reading Matters

It is just as important that children are exposed to good books and the joy of reading during the summer months as during the school year.

For the youngest children, summer reading encourages parents to read aloud to little ones, thus establishing the fundamental building blocks of reading and language.  For older children, summer reading helps to maintain or improve reading skills in a fun and exciting way and prevents the “summer slide”.  Studies show that young children who are not engaged in educational activities throughout the summer experience learning loss.

Make sure that you and your family are reading, reading, reading throughout the summer!

Visit the California Library Association website for more information about the value of summer reading.
